Log an event

The Log event dialog logs every kind of event, from a meal to a note.

Video without sound, 13 seconds. On Donut’s page, Log event logs a defecation.

Steps

  1. On an animal’s page, select the + button and choose Log event
  2. Select the button for the kind of event. Each button shows when you last logged one
  3. Check the form. It will default to the usual choice; for a feeding, this is the animal’s usual meal
  4. Check When, then select the button at the bottom

Selecting a dial on the animal’s page opens that kind of event’s form directly, without the list of events.

The dialog, up close

Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.

  1. The animal and the kind of event
  2. Something else returns to the list of events
  3. The event’s types. Choose the one that happened
  4. When defaults to the time the form was opened. Change it for something done earlier; Set to now restores it
  5. Notes, for anything else
  6. A button named for the event it logs

The kinds of event

The Defecation form logs Defecate, Urate or both. A category of your own logs one of its types, along with a note. Neither has a reminder. Breeding Cycle and Mating are covered under Matings.

Categories of your own, and their types, are created in Settings, Events & Categories. A hidden category will not have a button.

Cleaning

Under What was done, choose the cleaning type. The form will default to the type this animal receives most often.

A type marked resets counts as a full clean and starts the cleaning reminder over, from the animal’s Full substrate change every. Full Substrate Change always resets it. For your own types, this is set with the type’s Resets the cleaning reminder switch, in Settings, Events & Categories.

The Cleaning dial shows the last full clean. Spot cleans appear only in the animal’s History. To clean a whole rack, use Select & Log.

Handling

Handling isn’t an event. It is a single time kept on the animal, Last out, which is shown at the top of its page and in Home’s Last out column on a computer. It has no History row and no reminder.

Log Handling, in the animal’s + menu, sets Last out to now. The Handling button in Log event sets it to a time you select. To correct or clear Last out, select the pencil beside it.

Changing or deleting an event

Open the event from the animal’s History or from Event History. The same dialog will open on that event, with Save changes and Delete.

Feedings and meals

Log what an animal ate, refused or regurgitated, using Quick Feed or the Feeding form.

Quick Feed

Video without sound, 10 seconds. Selecting Ate logs Idris’s usual meal, and his Feeding dial starts again at due in 7d.

Quick Feed, under the dials on an animal’s page, logs its usual meal at the current time. Check the meal shown, then select Ate, or Refused if the animal did not eat. To reverse a log made in error, select Undo on the message.

Quick Feed will appear only for an animal in the collection that has a usual meal. To set one, enter feeding details in the animal’s page using Update on the + menu.

Log a feeding

For anything else, such as another size, multiple food items or to log a previous meal, use the Feeding form. It can be accessed from the Feeding dial, or from Log event's Feeding button, and defaults to the usual meal and the current time.

Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.

  1. Food lists your food types
  2. Size offers only the sizes that go with the food
  3. How many is the number of items
  4. Meal weight is the size’s default weight times the count, unless you choose to modify it
  5. Outcome is Ate, Refused or Regurgitated
  6. Repeat every is the number of days until the next meal is due

The sizes a food offers are set in Food settings. For a counted size, the form also shows what the feeding will take from stock; see Freezer and live stock.

The food selected is recorded as what was offered, so a refusal keeps its size and count. A refusal or a regurgitation counts as tried, not eaten. Reminders and due dates explains how each outcome affects the next due date.

Note

If Refused or Regurgitated is dimmed, your account has no Refused Feed or Regurgitated food type; the form says to add it in Settings, Food.

Logging a regurgitation

If your animal regurgitates a meal after the fact, you can edit the outcome from the meal in the animal’s history.

Enter the date the meal was regurgitated in the Came back up box (the date regurgitated cannot be earlier than the date of the meal).

Video without sound, 13 seconds. A meal in the animal’s History is changed to Regurgitated, and Came back up defaults to now.

A meal of several foods

Video without sound, 19 seconds. A second food joins Donut’s meal, and Log 2 feedings logs both.

Fill in the first food, then select Add another food. Each food has its own Food, Size, How many and Weight. When every food is entered, select the button at the bottom, which will read Log 2 feedings for two foods.

When, Notes, the Outcome and Repeat every apply to the whole meal, which is shown as one meal everywhere. Opening a logged meal later edits one food at a time. To delete the whole meal, open it in History and select Delete all 2.

A refusal from the old SnekLog that never recorded what was offered will open labeled Offered and ask you to set it.

Medication

A dose logged with Repeat starts a course, and SnekLog will remind you when the next dose is due.

Logging a dose

Open the form from Log event's Medication button, or from a running course’s dial. Choosing a medication fills in the rest of the form from its last dose.

Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.

  1. Medication. A running course’s medication is listed first
  2. Amount is in mL, Concentration in mg/mL and Dose in mg/kg. Enter the number alone, such as 0.4. History cannot display an amount with words in it
  3. Repeat keeps the course going, and shows when the next dose falls
  4. Last dose ends the course. With no course of that medication running, it reads Just this one
  5. Count is the dose’s number in its course
  6. Repeat every is the number of days until the next dose

How a course runs

A course is one medication on one animal. It runs from the newest dose of that medication for as long as that dose is set to Repeat, and the next dose is due its Repeat every later. Two medications can run side by side, each with its own dial. Logging an older dose you forgot does not change the course, and deleting the newest dose hands the course back to the dose before it.

Ending a course

To end a course, log the final dose with Last dose. If it was already logged with Repeat, open it from the animal’s History, select Last dose and then Save changes.

SnekLog never ends a course by itself. When a course runs well past due, the animal’s page will ask whether you are still giving it.

Where a course shows

Each running course has a dial on the animal’s page. A dose that is due is shown as an icon on Home and in the top bar, and on the Calendar with a Log button. Icons and dials use the name before the parentheses, so Panacur (Fenbendazole) is shown as Panacur.

Your medications are the types of the Medication category, in Settings, Events & Categories.

Weights and lengths

Log a weigh-in or a length in the animal’s own unit.

The weight shown on the animal’s page and on Home is its newest weigh-in, and a length works the same way. Lengths have no reminder; weighing has Weigh every (Reminders and due dates).

Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.

  1. The box, which takes a plain number, such as 85 or 85.5
  2. The unit: g, kg, oz or lb for a weight, and in, cm or ft for a length. It defaults to the animal’s own unit
  3. Last weigh-in, with its date, for comparison
  4. When defaults to the time the form was opened
  5. A button named for what it logs

When a number looks wrong

SnekLog will ask before saving a new entry that is more than 5 times above or below the last one. Entering 1.3 in grams after Donut’s 1,295 g brings up Is that 1.3 g? The usual cause is a number entered in the wrong unit: here, kilograms entered with grams selected.

When another unit fits the last entry, Save as 1.3 kg saves the entry in that unit. Save as 1.3 g saves it as typed, and Go back returns to the form. SnekLog asks only for a new entry.

In Select & Log’s Weigh-in, a weight 20% or more away from the last one will display a note, such as 35% up on last time. Right unit? The weight will still be saved.

Fixing a unit

Open the entry from the animal’s History, choose the correct unit, and select Save changes. Only the label changes, not the number: to convert 450 g to kilograms, enter 0.45 as well as choosing kg. See Units for more.

Sheds

Log each shed stage as you notice it. SnekLog will work out each animal’s cycle from the sheds you log.

Logging a shed

Open the form from the Shed dial or the Shed Cycle button, and choose the stage under Where in the cycle. It defaults to the stage that usually comes next.

The four stages
StageWhat it does
Pre-ShedStarts a shed, as pre-shed
In ShedStarts a shed, or moves one on, as in shed
Good ShedEnds the shed: it came off clean
Bad ShedEnds the shed: stuck or patchy

A shed stays open until you log a Good Shed or Bad Shed.

While an animal is in shed, its Shed dial and its icon on Home count the days, such as in shed · day 3. The count begins at day 0, the day you log it. Feeding still comes due, unless you set Settings, Preferences, Hide feeding while shedding.

How the estimate learns

SnekLog takes the days between an animal’s finished sheds and uses the middle value of the last 5. For example, cycles of 72, 88, 78, 94 and 77 days put the next shed 78 days after the last.

It takes 2 finished sheds to make a cycle. Until then, the dial will display estimate after a cycle, or estimate after one more after the first finished shed. Cycles under 5 days or over 400 days are omitted. There is no estimate while the animal is in shed. Logging an older shed, or deleting one, will recalculate the estimate.

The Calendar marks the expected day Shed expected, and the Info tab says how often the animal sheds. Home does not show the estimate.

Select & Log

Select & Log logs one care task for several animals at once: a feeding, a cleaning or a weigh-in. It is found only in Home’s + menu. The Daily Food List’s Feed and the Calendar’s + open the same check list.

Video without sound, 26 seconds. A cage is fed with one refusal and one skip, then the log is undone.

Steps

  1. On Home, select the + button and choose Select & Log. Every row will display a checkbox
  2. Check the animals. To select a whole cage, choose Cage at the top of the list and check the cage’s header
  3. Select Log for on the bar, and choose Quick Feed, a cleaning type or Weigh-in
  4. Check the list that opens, then select its button
  5. Select Done when you’re finished. Until then, Undo on the bar takes back the last log and returns any stock it took. It disappears when you log again or leave Home

Animals that were checked stay checked after a log.

The check list

For a feeding, mark who Refused and who gets Skip. For a cleaning, uncheck any animal you did not get to. For a weigh-in, enter each weight. The picture shows a Quick Feed of 6 animals’ usual meal.

Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.

  1. When defaults to the time the list was opened
  2. Ate, Refused or Skip for each animal. Every animal defaults to Ate, except an animal with no usual meal or one in shed. With Hide feeding while shedding set to In shed & pre-shed, an animal in pre-shed will default to Skip as well
  3. The meal. Select it to change the food, size or count for this log only
  4. The animal’s icons
  5. The line above the button, which counts who is skipped and what will come out of your stock

Skip logs nothing for that animal: no refusal is recorded, and its due date does not move. An animal with a dose due will display a line such as Panacur given with this meal, which is unchecked by default. A refused meal carries no dose.

A refused meal of a counted size has a Used the item switch. It defaults to on for a thawed item and off for a live one; see Freezer and live stock. After Done, take a log back from Event History with Delete all.

Event History

Find, change or delete anything you’ve logged, across every animal.

Open Event History in SnekLog (opens in a new tab)

Every event on your account is listed, newest first, 50 at a time. Select Load 50 more at the bottom of the list to show the next 50.

Point at an item, or at a number on the picture, to highlight it. Click to keep it lit.Tap an item, or a number on the picture, to highlight it.

  1. A heading for each day, above rows showing the time, the animal, what happened and the note
  2. A sitting’s tally
  3. A sitting: 3 or more events of one kind on one day, each within 15 minutes of the next. Select it to list them
  4. A meal of several foods, shown as one row with the foods joined by +
  5. logged 3 days later: an event saved, or last changed, days after its date

Events logged together are folded into one row, a sitting. Select Show › Every event to list them one by one instead, and Sort › Recently logged to put the event saved or changed last at the top, even when it is dated last week. Searching and filtering explains what Search and the other filters look at.

Video without sound, 20 seconds. A search for Panacur narrows the list. Then a rack’s feeding is opened and deleted with Delete all 6.

Changing or deleting an event

On a computer, select the pencil or the trash can at the end of the row. On a phone, select the three dots at the end of the row, which offer Edit this feeding, Open Donut or Delete; selecting the row itself does nothing.

To delete a whole sitting or meal, open it and select Delete all 6 at the bottom. This is also how to take back a Select & Log after Done.

An edit opens the animal’s page with the log dialog on that event, and returns you here with your filters as they were.

Careful

A delete here has no Undo. Delete all removes every event in the sitting or meal, so check the list in the dialog first.
