Home Screen & Icons
Home is the first row in the sidebar, and the screen SnekLog opens on. Its page is titled Collection.
Open Home in SnekLog (opens in a new tab)
Icons on the Home screen show what needs attention. Under individual animals, icons show what is due and how urgent it is.
Home lists your animals A to Z by Name / ID. Select one to open its page.
One row, up close
Each animal in your collection has a row. Here’s one on mobile:
Point at an item, or at a number on the picture, to highlight it. Click to keep it lit.Tap an item, or a number on the picture, to highlight it.
- The name, with a male or female icon. A status other than Active, such as For Sale or Quarantine, shows as an icon beside it
- The picture. An animal without a photo shows its first letter instead
- The Name / ID and weight, then the morph. The Name / ID is left out when it’s the same as the nickname
- Last feeding/defecation events logged
- The icons under the name: what the animal needs now, always in the same order: feeding, medication, cleaning, weighing, then shed
What each icon means is on Icons, colors and marks. An animal with no icons needs nothing right now.
Ate, tried and the other times
- ate counts from the last meal the animal ate. It says today for the first 24 hours, then 1d, 2d and so on
- tried shows under it when a refusal or a regurgitation came after that meal. A tried meal doesn’t count as eaten
- defecated shows once your account has logged a defecation
On a computer, the times are columns:
Point at an item, or at a number on the picture, to highlight it. Click to keep it lit.Tap an item, or a number on the picture, to highlight it.
- Needs: the icons for what each animal needs
- Last ate: its last meal
- Last tried: its newest feeding of any kind, eaten or not
- Last out: its last handling
- Last defecated
The summary line
On a computer, a line beside the title counts what’s due, such as 17 animals · 3 to feed · 1 to clean. Select a count to show only those animals. On a phone, use the Needs filter instead.
Three layouts This device only
Home shows photo cards, rows or compact rows. Each phone and computer keeps its own choice. A computer starts on photo cards and a phone on rows, or on compact rows for an account the old SnekLog had set to Compact.
Finding animals
Search and the filter buttons, Status, Categories, Cages, Rooms and Needs, narrow the list. Home starts on the animals in the collection. More in Searching and filtering.
A new account’s Home says No animals yet, with a link to import a spreadsheet.
Announcements
News about SnekLog you haven’t seen opens over Home. Got it on the last one closes it.
Photo Gallery
The Photo Gallery is in the sidebar, under Reptiles.
Open the Photo Gallery in SnekLog (opens in a new tab)
The Photo Gallery shows the photos of every animal your filters include. The filters default to the animals in the collection. Photos are added on each animal’s own Photos tab.
On a computer, 13 seconds
On a phone, 14 seconds
By animal groups the photos under each animal’s name. Select the name to open that animal’s Photos tab. Mosaic shows every photo in one wall, newest first. The filters are the same as on Reports & Cage Cards, with a sort by name or by newest photo.
A photo opens in the same viewer and menu as on an animal’s page (see Viewing photos).
Import from a spreadsheet
On Home, select the + button and choose Import reptiles. Import is also in Settings, under Your collection.
Open Import reptiles in SnekLog (opens in a new tab)
Import will add up to 100 animals at once from a spreadsheet, each with its usual meal. You can review every animal before anything is saved.
Import your sheet
- If desired, download Template .xlsx or Template .csv, a sheet with the correct column names. The .xlsx template lists your own food types and sizes
- Upload your sheet with Choose a file, or paste its cells, headers included, under Paste rows
- If a column name matches nothing, choose what it holds, or Skip this column
- On the Check step, set For every row for blank cells, and fix or leave out any animal that is held back
- Select the Create button on the bar at the foot of the page

No sound. Captions are on; turn them off in the player’s controls.

Delete the template’s example row before importing. An older Excel file (.xls) cannot be read. Save it as .xlsx or .csv first.
The Check step
Point at an item, or at a part of the picture, to highlight it. Click an item to keep it lit.Tap an item to highlight it on the picture.
- A food name you don’t have, read as your closest one, with its picker
- A note on how a cell was read
- Everything it will save opens the rest of the card
- Leave out omits the row from the import
- A Name / ID already in your collection holds the row back
- A nickname another animal already has also holds the row back
A row is held back for only three reasons: a missing or taken Name / ID, a taken nickname, or a value too long for its field. Fix it on the card, or select Leave out.
A category, cage, food type or size you don’t have will be created, unless you select one of yours. A selection applies to every row with the same name. SnekLog will guess a new food type’s Uses stock from from its name; change it in Settings, Food if needed.
What the dates log
Past history is not imported. Three dates will each log one event, so the reminders start on time:
- Last fed, with a food type, logs one feeding of the usual meal. It takes nothing from your stock counts
- Last cleaned logs a Full Substrate Change
- Last shed logs a Good Shed
Each is logged at noon UTC on that date. A date in the future will be left blank.
The template’s columns
A blank cell is acceptable in every column except Name/ID.
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Name/ID | Your record ID, not already in your collection |
| Nickname | Blank uses the Name/ID |
| Sex | Male, Female or Unknown, or M, F or ? |
| Category, Cage | One of yours, or a new name to create it. Blank is Unsorted |
| Species, Scientific name, Morph | As you write them |
| Birthday | A year alone is read as Jan 1 and marked estimated |
| Weight, Length | Its weight or length now, such as 1295 g or 48 in, saved as its first entry |
| Tub ID | Where in that cage or rack |
| Date acquired, Origin, Breeder | When and where you got it, and who bred it |
| Bred | Captive bred, Wild caught or Unknown, or CB, WC or U |
| Price paid | Such as 120 or $120.50 |
| Feed every (days) | Blank uses the category’s default |
| Food type, Food size | Its usual meal. A new size is created with no weight |
| Items per feeding | Blank is 1 |
| Last fed, Last cleaned, Last shed | See above |
| Temp range, Humidity range | Numbers only, such as 78-82. Blank uses the category’s default |
| Notes, Status | Its notes, and one of the eight statuses |
Write dates as 2017-06-14, or your usual way. A date with slashes is read month first. SnekLog also reads Venomous, Clean every (days), Weigh every (days), Breeder contact, License #, Microchip #, Clutch ID, Mother and Father. A mother or father is linked when its Name / ID is one of your animals of that sex.
Undoing an import
On the Done step, Undo this import removes the animals, everything logged on them, and the categories, cages and foods the import created, unless something else uses them by then.
Undo is available only on the Done step, until you leave the page. After that, delete the animals one at a time.
