Reminders and due dates

Every reminder takes the last time a task was done and adds its set interval. Reminders show on Home, in the top bar’s care icons, on each animal’s dials, on the Daily Food List and on the Calendar.

The slideshow below shows how intervals work, using feeding as an example. There are more details on intervals in each care section.

How a Feeding Interval WorksStep 1 of 8

On Home on Oct 4

DonutBP-Donut-2017 ate 1d

The last meal

A feeding reminder starts from the newest meal. Donut ate on Oct 3.

Repeat every

Each feeding has its own Repeat every, which defaults to the animal’s Feed every. A change to Feed every applies to the next feeding that is logged onward. To move the current due date, edit the last feeding’s Repeat every.

Due

Oct 3 plus 7 days makes the next meal due on Oct 10. With Show things as due early at 24 hours, Home will list it from Oct 9 with a tinted icon.

Overdue

Once the due time passes, the icon gets a solid edge and shows how late the meal is.

A refused meal

Donut refused a meal on Oct 11. A refusal counts as tried, so the meal is still due.

While fasting

While Donut is marked fasting, a refusal also moves the date: the next meal is due 7 days after it, on Oct 18.

Or, a regurgitation

In another case, Donut ate a meal on Oct 10 and regurgitated it on Oct 12. That counts as tried, so ate still counts from Oct 3.

Timed from the day it came back up

The next meal is counted from Oct 12, using that meal’s own Repeat every. Here it is 10 days, so Donut is due on Oct 22.

More information

Use Settings, Preferences to determine how early you would like to see reminders before the due date.

Only animals in the collection will have care items due. A late log only moves a due date if it is the newest: see Dates and times.

Icons, colors and marks

Each kind of care has its own icon and color, and keeps them everywhere in SnekLog.

These icons appear on Home, in Select & Log’s check list and on the Daily Food List, for animals in the collection. The top bar’s five care icons show how many animals need each kind of care.

How an icon shows urgency

Overdue needs show with a bold border and numbered details.

  • Due soon is a tinted icon that says due. It shows up a while before the time comes; this can be configured in Settings, Preferences, Show things as due early
  • Overdue says how late, such as 2d. Cleaning and weighing icons stay tinted even when late
  • A plain fact is an outline only, such as fasting

Icons with text

  • A medication icon names the medication, such as Panacur
  • A shed icon counts the days since that stage was logged, such as in shed · day 3
  • A syringe, such as Panacur, means an animal is on a course of medication and the next dose falls inside your “On medication” window

Other colors

Picture to come: a crop of Home’s filter row on a phone, in the owner’s account, with one filter narrowing the list (such as Needs set to Feeding) so its button shows green beside the plain ones

Green is used for buttons and filters that are on.

  • Status icons: Active is green, Quarantine amber, For Sale, Reserved and On Loan blue, and Sold, Deceased and Inactive gray. Home shows a status icon for every status except Active
  • The Calendar’s marks take the color of their kind: see The Calendar

Freezer and live stock

SnekLog can keep a count of frozen feeders and of live feeders in Settings, Food, and will take from the correct count when a feeding is logged.

On a computer, 24 seconds

On a phone, 27 seconds

Two counts for each size

Each food size can keep two counts: in the freezer and live on hand. The freezer count holds anything that isn’t alive, such as frozen prey. A pre-killed feeder is taken from the live count, because it was alive until it was prepared for feeding. Each size has one freezer count, so the contents of two freezers are counted together.

A count is turned on for each food size with Settings, Food, Count stock.

The freezer count turns on first, unless the animals with this size as their usual meal eat live food. In that case the live count turns on, or both counts if some animals eat each.

Which count a food type uses

Each food type’s Settings, Food, Uses stock from sets which count its feedings take from:

  • Frozen stock, such as Rat Frozen
  • Live stock, such as Rat Live and Rat Pre-killed
  • Not counted, such as Tube Feed

A new food type’s choice defaults to a guess from its name, and Food settings labels each type Frozen or Live. A change applies from the next feeding.

What a feeding takes

What one feeding takes A refused or regurgitated meal goes by the food type that was offered.
What happenedFrozen stockLive stockNot counted
AteTakes the itemsTakes the itemsNothing
RefusedTakes the items, unless you switch it offNothing, unless you switch it onNothing
RegurgitatedTakes the itemsTakes the itemsNothing
SkipNothingNothingNothing

A thawed item can’t go back in the freezer, but a refused live feeder is usually still alive. The switch for a refused item is Subtract from the freezer or Subtract from live stock on the Feeding form, Used the item in Select & Log, and Didn't use it or It was used on a refused Quick Feed’s message.

To take from another count for one feeding, select change on the Feeding form’s Takes 1 from the freezer line. In Select & Log, select the animal’s meal and choose under From.

A count never prevents a feeding from being logged. It stops at 0 and displays more used than counted until it is set again. If a size doesn’t count the stock a food type uses, the feeding takes nothing, and the form says so.

Editing, deleting or undoing a feeding returns what it took to the count. A feeding deleted with its animal, food type or size returns nothing.

Units

Every weigh-in and length is logged with a unit, chosen with the unit buttons on its form.

Each animal has its own units

Units are set for each animal, not for the whole account. A new animal’s Starting weight and Starting length set its first units, which default to grams and inches. Every entry keeps the unit it was logged in: g, kg, oz or lb for weight, and in, cm or ft for length. The animal’s unit is the unit of its newest entry. The Growth chart converts every entry into the animal’s current unit.

Changing an entry’s unit relabels it and does not convert its number. Weights and lengths explains how to fix a unit, and the check that catches a mix-up.

Note

If you carried an account from the old SnekLog, you will be prompted to choose the preferred units for each animal, since the previous version did not specify them.

Not now asks again the next time the animal is opened. To change the answer later, use the Units card on the animal’s Info tab.

Food weights

Each food size has its own weight and unit, set in Settings, Food. A feeding’s weight is the size’s weight times the count, unless you modify it. A meal of several foods is added up in their unit, or in grams when the units differ.

Temperature

Temperature is the one unit set for the whole account (see Settings, Preferences, Temperature). SnekLog may infer the correct units; you can modify them if needed.

Statuses, names and “in the collection”

Every animal has one status, set in Update under Basics.

  1. The eight statuses (here Quarantine is selected)
  2. The statuses Home and the Photo Gallery default to
  3. The details that go with the selected status

SnekLog will not change a status automatically, even when a quarantine is over.

What “in the collection” means

An animal is in the collection when its status is Active, For Sale, Reserved or Quarantine. Only these animals are ever due. Home, the Photo Gallery and Reports & Cage Cards default to showing only these.

When an animal leaves the collection

An animal that is no longer in the collection has its reminders off, and its dials show only when each thing was last done. Nothing is deleted. The Calendar omits its history unless Include former animals' history is checked. If the status is changed back, its reminders return, and the animal may be due immediately.

Name / ID and nickname

  • The Name / ID is the animal’s record, such as BP-Donut-2017. It is required, and no two animals can share one. Capitals count: BP-01 and bp-01 are two different IDs
  • The nickname is what SnekLog calls the animal. It is optional, and if blank the Name / ID is used. No two animals can share a nickname either

The record ID is shown beside the nickname only when the two differ.

Dialogs, Undo and deleting

How dialogs close

  • The dimmed page behind a dialog doesn’t close it. Use Cancel or the ×
  • Settings editors, the Update sections, the Calendar’s day panel and Send feedback will close when you select the page beside them
  • Leaving with something typed asks first, such as Discard this feeding?

Notes from SnekLog

When something looks unusual, such as a weight far from the last one, SnekLog may say so in a tinted note. A note never stops a save or changes what you typed. A red message does stop the save, and says what’s wrong.

When things save

A log form saves on its button, such as Log feeding, and each Update section on its own save button. Add reptile, Add hatchlings and an import add nothing until you select the button at the foot of the page. In Settings, a switch saves as soon as you change it.

Logging several things at once is all or nothing: if one can’t be saved, none is.

Messages and Undo

After most actions, a message shows at the foot of the screen for 7 seconds. These offer an Undo option:

  • Quick Feed and Log Handling, and saving a Handling form
  • a log from the Calendar
  • End course, Mark Hatched, Clear plan and Move to the freezer…

Select & Log, the Daily Food List’s Feed and Quick Feed on Quick Actions keep Undo on their own bar or band for longer. An import has Undo this import on its last step.

Any other event logged from a form has no Undo: open it from the animal’s History to change or delete it.

Deleting information

Every delete asks first. The more it destroys, the more it asks.
What is included with a deletion
DeletingWhat goes with itTo confirm
An event or a mealReminders are recalculatedDelete
A photoIf it was the main one, the newest other photo takes overDelete photo

A food type or event category also asks you to check a box. One with nothing logged under it needs only Delete.

Dates and times

Your device’s clock

Times on every screen are shown in the device’s own time zone. SnekLog has no time zone setting. If the device’s time zone changes, the app follows it.

Logging something late

To log something after the fact, change the form’s When to the time it happened. A late log is added to the history, and moves a due date only if it is newer than the event that set it. An event logged from a past day on the Calendar defaults to noon on that day.

Dates with no time of day

Some dates have no time of day and show as the same day wherever SnekLog is opened: an animal’s birthday and date acquired, the dates that go with a status, the date a photo was taken, and a clutch’s dates.

How days are counted

  • Home and the top bar count whole days of 24 hours. A meal logged at 9 PM yesterday shows as today until 9 PM tonight, then as 1d. A time yet to come is rounded up, and is counted in hours within a day, such as due in 5h
  • The Calendar counts calendar days. Something due at 10 PM the previous night is 1 day overdue the next morning
